About Me | 自我介绍
你好!My name is Steven C. Poling Jr., Sinologist and Mandarin Chinese Language Expert. I am graduate of the University of Michigan (中文:密西根大學). My major was Asian Studies with a Concentration in Mandarin Chinese Language. I have been interested in Chinese for several years now, and this site is part of my continuing efforts to help educate people about China, its people, language, history, and culture.
I have been studying Mandarin Chinese intensively for more than eight years now, and during this time I could not help but notice that Chinese texts in English translation have often been lacking. Always there seems to be a major disconnect from Chinese to English, or vice versa. Therefore, it is with my unique English and Chinese linguistic skills that I am endeavoring to provide English-language readers with my own translations, and promote the learning of the Chinese language here in the United States and in the English-speaking world. These translations focus more on a direct translation, where I also attempt to retain the original grammatical structure so that learners of Chinese can more easily understand the original Chinese by looking at a close translation. Therefore, the is less of a focus, in these translations, on the extended meaning of the text. I will eventually be adding my own commentary to expound upon the deeper nature of each piece. I feel that many English translations are too deeply interpretive. Let's leave the interpretation to the readers, shall we?
Tutoring:
I offer private tutoring for any level of learner, both serious and recreational. With regard to the University of Michigan, I can accommodate such classes as ASIANLAN 101 & 102, 201 & 202, 301 & 302, 401 & 402, 409 & 410, etc.) for the Ann Arbor, Michigan area.
Even if you simply are interested in picking up a little Chinese for fun, send me an e-mail and we can get in touch. I would happily tutor anyone in the Ann Arbor area. You don't have to be a University Student. Any level -- any goal -- is fine. For example, even if you just want to learn a little about Chinese Characters and Calligraphy, or dabble a bit in Chinese poetry, we can work something out. Reach out to China, and learn a little bit in the process!
If interested, please e-mail me at [email protected].
Once again, check me out on Linked-In, FaceBook, or Twitter!
